Crunchy Peanut Butter Dog Treats

Holding a Turtle at Boatswain's Beach Turtle Farm

After spending 24 days traveling to Miami, Key West, Cape Cod and the Cayman Islands it is finally back to reality for my husband and me. I am sorry to those of you who have missed my travel posts, but you have no idea how hard it was to find affordable internet access in the Cayman Islands. We had a wonderful time reminiscing about our wedding and eating at some amazing restaurants. The highlight of our vacation was the absolutely amazing scuba diving that they have in the Cayman Islands. Three years ago when Andrew and I were thinking of places to have a destination wedding we decided on Grand Cayman for its amazing long white sandy beaches and the spectacular scuba diving.

While in Grand Cayman we went on four dives. There are two well known areas for scuba diving there. The North Wall is my favorite! It is well known as some of the best wall diving in the Caribbean. In many of the dives along the North wall the cliff plunges in the excess of 6000 feet past the reef into a dark blue abyss. You could feel the cold water coming up from the deep dark water. I have to admit it was a bit frightening! As we navigated through several tunnels we saw tons of lobsters peeking out through crevices in the coral. Over the course of our four dives we saw three giant eagle rays, numerous sea turtles, two reef squids, stingrays, a 5 foot nurse shark and tons of fish and coral! It was so much fun!

Now it is back to reality today as we are preparing for the movers to come on Monday and Tuesday to pack up our house. In the past when we have moved we have always packed and moved everything ourselves, but this time Andrew’s new job is paying for movers to pack everything and move it to Peoria, Illinois. It is a very strange feeling having someone else pack!

While we traveled around these past weeks we left our two dogs Hemingway and Winston with my parents. We missed them so much and were super excited to see them again! As soon as I got home I made them these homemade dog treats, they are one of their favorite recipes and they always go crazy whenever I make them. Want to have your furry friend eating out of the palm of your hand? Make a batch of these crunchy,
healthy, homemade treats! 🙂

Finally they get to dig in! 🙂

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup dry oats
  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 cup smooth peanut butter
  • 1/2 cup chunky peanut butter
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/4 cup canola oil
  • 1 egg, beaten

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°. Lightly grease a cookie sheet.
  2. In a large bowl, combine oats, flour, peanut butters, water, canola oil and egg.
  3. Lightly flour a flat, clean surface and roll the mixture out to about ¾ inch thickness. Cut mixture using a canine-themed cookie cutter and place on a prepared cookie sheet. Bake for 20 minutes on one side and then flip the treats over and bake an additional 20 minutes. Remove to cooling racks and let cool thoroughly, about 2 hours. They will harden as they cool.
