Tzatziki Sauce

Tzatziki is a popular Greek sauce that traditionally accompanies gyros, souvlaki, and calamari. This cooling combination of Greek yogurt mixed with garlic, cucumber, lemon juice and mint is also wonderful served as an appetizer with pita wedges, a spread for sandwiches, or thinned out with olive oil for a refreshing salad dressing.

Tzatziki Sauce

Ingredients: 

  • 1 cup cucumber, peeled, seeded, and finely diced
  • 1 cup Greek yogurt
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 2 small garlic cloves, minced (about 1 teaspoon)
  • 2 tablespoons fresh mint, finely chopped
Directions:

  1. Peel, seed and finely dice the cucumber. Place the cucumber in paper towels and squeeze as much excess moisture as possible.
  2. Place the squeezed cucumber in a medium bowl and add the Greek yogurt, salt, lemon juice, garlic, and mint. Cover and refrigerate at least 30 minutes before serving. Serve with grilled pita wedges.

      Go ahead and give it a try…just let me know how it turns out for you! 😉 I would just make sure that the yogurt it thick like Greek yogurt, otherwise you might need to let it drain for 30 minutes to get the proper consistency. You can drain it by lining a fine-mesh strainer set over a bowl with a triple layer of paper towels, just spoon the yogurt into lined strainer, cover, and refrigerate for 30 minutes.

    Everytime I have tzatziki sacuce it reminds me of the best thing in the summertime…cucumber salad. My mom is German and whenever my Omi comes to visit, she brings packets of salad dressings from Germany. All she does is thinly slice the cucumber, like paper thin, mix sour cream with the packet of seasoning, let it chill til the sour cream gets to a thin consistency, and then have the coolest, best tasting salad ever. I think I’m going to see if I can get my mom to use greek yogurt next time I’m home and see how that tastes! I’m curious to see if the yogurt will get to the right consistency, and if it does I’m sure it’ll be even more delicious than usual.
