Hot Wings

Football and hot wings are the best combination ever made! Crispy, crunchy, lightly breaded wings bathed in hot sauce. This is one of my favorite appetizers to make during football season. I have been excited about the beginning of football season for a couple of weeks now. I was thinking about all of my favorite “football foods” and hot wings were on the top of my list…I knew I had to make them for the first game. I made these amazing wings last night for the Ohio State vs Marshall game and they were devoured in less than 5 minutes! 🙂 Nothing is better on a football day than a cold beer, hot wings, and buckeyes. The greatest part about hot wings is that they are so versatile you can make them as hot as you dare! Just make sure you have plenty of celery and bleu cheese dipping sauce. So now that you know my favorite football food, what do you like to eat when you watch the big game?

  • ½ cup flour
  • ¼ teaspoon paprika
  • ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 10 chicken wings, wingtips removed, cut into wingettes and drumettes
  • oil (for frying)
  • ¼ cup butter
  • ¼ cup hot sauce (or to taste)
  • 1 dash black pepper
  • 1 dash garlic powder
  • 4 celery ribs

  1. In a small bowl mix together flour, paprika, cayenne pepper, and salt.
  2. Place chicken wings in a large bowl and toss with the flour mixture until evenly coated. Cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  3. Cut celery into thin sticks. Soak celery in a bowl of ice and cold water at least 30 minutes and up to 1 hour.
  4. In a heavy saucepan that is at least 5 inches deep, heat 2 inches of oil over medium heat until it registers 375°F on thermometer. Fry chicken wings in batches for 10-15 minutes until golden brown. Using tongs or a slotted spoon, remove wings to a plate lined with paper towels to drain.
  5. In a small saucepan, over low heat, combine hot sauce, black pepper, garlic powder and butter until butter is melted. Stir to combine and remove from heat.
  6. Place wings in a serving bowl, add the sauce and toss to coat evenly. Serve with blue cheese dressing and celery

    I may have to try these for one of our games:) We tailgate with 3-5 families and we really share quite the feast. We meet around 10am , eat and drink wine for about 3 hours then we grill tri tip and make sandwiches for everyone to take into the game! I’m excited for the season to begin so I can try some of the great recipes I’ve been collecting and your hot wings is on my list, thanks for sharing!

    Made these for my sweetie on Friday, first attempt at Buffalo Wings at home. Your recipe was easy to follow and we got a very tasty and satisfying result! We both craved a hotter burn in the sauce, though. I used Crystal hot sauce, which is pretty mild. Any suggestions on turning up the heat? Thanks for this one, really delicious.

      I am glad that you liked them! My husband really likes super hot wings so we actually added a bit more hot sauce than I put in the recipe directions. I used 6 tablespoons of hot sauce (Franks Hot Sauce) and added about 2 tablespoon of red pepper flakes to the flour mixture. I have also heard of adding 2 tablespoons of chopped jalapenos to the hot sauce/butter mixture before coating the wings in it. Hope this helps! 🙂 Let me know how they turn out!

    My wing recipe is almost identical except for the sauce. I also use a deep fryer. My sauce is 6 tablespoons of Frank’s Hot Sauce (I suppose you could use another brand, I just really like Frank’s) 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil, 1 tablespoon of vinegar, 5 tablespoons of light brown sugar, Tabasco sauce to taste, and a generous pinch of onion powder to taste. Give it a try and let me know what you think.

    These chicken wings were super easy and my husband and his friends loved them. I made 2 batches and in the second I added a half teaspoon of chilli flakes to spice it up a bit for them. Nice blog you have too.
